Master your dressage class
Posted 8th December 2021
Remember your dressage test every time
Do nerves sometimes get the better of you and make your mind go blank when you’re at a comp? Us, too! Being in a pressured environment can cause us to feel tense, nervous and forgetful. So, if you have trouble remembering your test, check out Team PONY’s memory masterclass.
Homework
First up, you’ll need to get a copy of your test and read through it – you should be able to download it online or get it from the show organisers. Familiarise yourself with the paces and types of movements, then note down anything that you’re unsure about and ask your instructor.
Camera, Action!
Watching a video of you or someone else riding the test is a great way to get it imprinted into your memory. In the weeks leading up to the comp, ask a friend or parent to video your test every time you practise it. You’re sure to notice improvements each week, plus you’ll be able to see how your pony moves and responds to your aids, as well as parts you need to work on in your training. As you watch the video you can say the test out loud to test yourself, too!
Top Tip
Make sure the video is filmed from C – where the judge will be sitting – to give you a good idea of the view they’ll have, including how straight your centre line will be!
A matter of time
Plan your comps in advance so you’re not rushing to learn the test in a few days. Mistakes can easily happen if you do things in a hurry, so sit down and schedule in your comps so you have plenty of time to learn them. To set yourself up for success, leave at least three weeks of preparation before your comp. This way, if you have a question about a particular movement or need a lesson to practise, you’ve got time to get on top of it.
