Give your pony a health check with our seven-step guide

Healthy-as-a-horse

As your pony’s carer, you’re responsible for making sure he stays happy and healthy, so it’s crucial that you’re clued up on the signs that indicate he’s unwell.

Do you know how to check he’s in top condition? Follow our guide to find out!

  1. Check his TPR

Knowing your pony’s normal temperature, pulse and respiration rates is essential. They vary between individuals so spend at least a fortnight monitoring your pony every day to know what his normal is. At rest they should be…

  • temperature: 5–38.5ºC
  • pulse: 36–40 beats per minute
  • respiration: 8–15 breaths per minute
  1. Look at his gums

Your pony’s gums should be moist and salmon pink in colour. If they’re deep red, pale or overly yellow, speak to your vet.

Top tip

If you notice any changes in your pony’s physical or mental wellbeing, contact your vet immediately, as it could be a sign something is wrong.

  1. Listen to his tummy

It’s normal for your pony’s gut to make gurgling or tinkling sounds, so press your ear gently against his tummy to check his gut is functioning well. If you can’t hear anything, and he’s showing other symptoms, it could be a sign of colic.
