Laura Collett

Her record is nothing short of incredible – find out all about the inspirational Laura Collett right here

There’s no stopping Laura Collett and her top ride, London 52. They’ve had the most sensational 12 months together being part of the gold-medal winning team at the Tokyo Olympics and, more recently, having a record-breaking win at Badminton Horse Trials.

Where it all began

When Laura was two years old, she got her first pony Genie. Talking to PONY, Laura said she fell off her quite a lot because she was really naughty whenever she wasn’t on the lead rein. She was a total angel though when she was clipped on!

Deciding factor

Did you know that Laura used to do a lot of showjumping – and even a bit of showing – when she was younger? But she soon turned to the thrill of eventing when she decided that she wanted more of a challenge.

PC pro

From the age of seven, Laura was a member of the Pony Club and she loved going to camp and rallies. Her Pony Club days were full of lessons, and not just the ridden type. Laura learnt the valuable life lesson of being a team player while she was on the PC showjumping and eventing teams. The skills she learnt certainly helped set her up for the success she’s had in recent years.

Take your pick

When talking about what she looks for in a potential competition horse, Laura explained that a good attitude and temperament are key. The horse has got to be willing to work with you, but they also need to have nice paces and jump well.

5* feeling

Laura and the stunning London 52, who is a bay Holsteiner gelding, won their first 5* event back in 2020 at Pau in France. Since then, they’ve gone from strength to strength. Not only did they win the 2022 Badminton Horse Trials, they also set the record for the lowest-ever score and Laura became only the fifth rider to have ever won after being in the lead after the cross-country phase.

Against all odds

Back in 2013, Laura had a really nasty fall that left her blind in one eye. But that didn’t take away her determination and drive to reach the top of the sport. Her story is a truly inspirational one and we can’t wait to see what she gets up to next.
