Have a go at medium paces with Meg Elphick’s ultimate guide
Did you know that anyone can learn to ride medium paces? You don’t need a super-flashy pony either! So, whether you’re dreaming of becoming the next Charlotte Dujardin or Lottie Fry, or you just want to have fun with your fave pony and try something new, Meg Elphick is here to show you how!
Picture perfect
Medium paces require your pony to lengthen his stride to cover more ground while staying in the same rhythm and tempo. To be able to do this correctly, your pony needs to extend his head and neck forward to lengthen his frame and swing through his back, working into the contact. He should also remain in good balance and feel light in your hand – as if he’s powering up a hill!
What’s the benefit?
There are actually lots of benefits to riding medium paces. Not only does it look super-cool and mean you’re a totally awesome rider, it also shows that your pony…
- is forward thinking
- can work from his hindquarters
- has a well-muscled topline
Top riding tips!
When it comes to teaching your pony medium paces, remember that you’re not asking him to go faster – just to take bigger steps. So, with that in mind, think about…
- allowing your hands forward slightly to encourage him to also move his head forward
- keeping a good rein contact to maintain a round frame
- wrapping your legs around his sides
- opening up your hips and lightening your seat to allow yourself to move more freely
- half-halting to contain the power
It might take a few sessions for your pony to get to grips with medium paces, so don’t worry if he doesn’t get it straight away! Aim for a few lengthened strides at first, then be sure to reward him. As he becomes stronger and more responsive to your aids, you can ask for more steps at a time.
Your aids might need to be a little more expressive to start with, too, to help him understand what you’re asking. But with lots of practice, one day you’ll be able to make minor adjustments to your position that will signal to him to lengthen.
