Get competition ready with Team PONY’s five step guide
Do you dream about taking your pony to a comp, but don’t know where to start? Don’t worry, we’re here to help! Read on to find out all you need to know about preparing for a big day out in the competition arena.
TOP TIP
Tack shops are great places to scout out local show venues. Look at the noticeboard or on the counter for posters or schedules – super-handy!
1. Pick ‘n’ mix
It’s a good idea to think about what you want to do and achieve with your pony. In other words, set some goals! Firstly, decide what discipline’s your favourite – it could be showjumping, dressage, showing or cross-country. Then, consider your ability, as well as your pony’s, when choosing what level to enter. If you’re unsure, your instructor will be able to help.
When you know what type of comp and which class you’re going for, check out some show schedules to see what’s on offer. You can enter most competitions online before the event, but you might find some local shows will take entries on the day.
TOP TIP
If you plan to plait your pony’s mane for the comp, avoid using detangler on it because it’ll become super-slippery and tricky to handle! It’s best to not use coat shine all over your pony’s body, too – you don’t want your saddle to slip halfway through your dressage test or showjumping course!
