Follow our step-by-step guide to the ultimate grooming sesh
Want to give your pony a bit of extra love and attention? Well, treating him to a long, relaxing groom’s a great way to do it! Not only will it help relax him, it’s also really good for his coat condition and blood circulation. Follow our gleam routine to get your pony’s coat looking shiner than ever!
Time: 40 – 60 minutes
What you’ll need:
- hose
- hoof pick
- dandy brush
- mane comb
- rubber curry comb
- face brush
- metal curry comb
- body brush
- plastic curry comb
- towel
- coat conditioner
- mane and tail conditioner
- cloth
- hoof balm or oil
- sponge
Step 1: Scrub-a-dub-dub
Pick out his feet, then use a scrubbing brush to help get his hooves clean – on the outside and underside!
Step 2: Brush down
Use a dandy brush to remove any dry mud and dirt. Only use this brush on areas of his coat that aren’t clipped and take extra care over bony areas, such as his legs.
Top tip
If it’s warm enough, give your pony a bath the day before his grooming sesh. It’ll help get rid of any underlying dirt and scurf that’s stuck in his coat.
Step 3: Comb through
Spray or rub some conditioner onto your pony’s mane, then use a mane brush, comb or your fingers to work out the knots. You can do the same with his tail, too.
Step 4: Brush down
Next, take a rubber curry comb and use it in circular motions all over his coat. Focus on his body and avoid bony areas, such as his legs, or ones with sensitive skin, such as his tummy. This will help loosen moulting hair and bring any remaining dirt to the surface. He’ll enjoy the massaging effect, too!
Step 5: Up to scratch
Do the same with a plastic curry comb. Use it in a circular motion at first and, if he has any really itchy spots, spend a little more time scratching those – he’ll love it! Then, smooth his coat back down by brushing in the direction of his hair.
Step 6: Flick over
Now take a brush that has long bristles and glide it across his coat, flicking the dust off when you reach the end of each stroke – this will make his coat start to look mega shiny.
Step 7: Face time
If your pony is fully clipped, smarten up his face by using a soft face brush to carefully remove any dust or scurf. Using one with really soft bristles might send him to sleep!
Step 8: Soft touch
To give your pony’s coat a little extra shine, use a body brush all over his coat and legs. It’ll make him feel super-soft and smooth all over.
Step 9: Shine up
Using a cloth and coat conditioner is sure to make your pony dazzle! Spray a microfibre towel or a flannel with some coat conditioner, then wipe it across his coat. You can also use warm water, which is known as hot clothing, to remove the last traces of dust.
Step 10: Finishing touches
For the perfect finish, put some hoof balm or oil onto your pony’s hooves. Sponge lightly around his eyes and nostrils, too, to make sure they’re free from dust.
