Ten super-fun things to do with your pony

Now it’s summer, it’s a great time to have a go at doing something different with your pony

Looking for new things to try with your pony? Look no further! We have a great list for you to try and if you’ve already done it, you can tick it straight off!

1. New discipline

Is there something you’ve always wanted to have a go at but have been too scared to try? Maybe it’s doing some mounted games or having a pop over your first jump. Trying a new discipline is sure to keep your pony interested and, you never know, maybe you’ll find your true calling!

2. Pony picnic

Hacking with a twist! Pack some fave snacks for you and your pony and some water and take them with you on a hack and don’t forget the picnic blanket! Always have a parent or friend with you to walk on foot so they can carry your picnic in a rucksack and you can explore the countryside together with a pit stop break for your food.

3. Seasonal photoshoot

What better way to celebrate a season than doing a fancy-dress photoshoot? For example, when Halloween comes around. you could dress up as a headless horseman and paint your pony as a skeleton and take sooo many cool photos!

4. Pony Club or riding club

Joining a new club can be daunting, especially if you don’t know anyone, but don’t let that put you off. Once you start, you’ll make loads of new pony pals and will get to try sooo many new things!

5. Arena hire

Why not take your pony to a different arena by hiring one? It’ll be great for him to see somewhere different and it’s great comp prep, too, for when you take him to a new venue where you’re competing.

6. Jumping with no hands

You read that right! Have a go popping through a grid with no hands on your reins. Tie the reins in a knot so it’s easy to grab hold of them when you come out of the other end and always test the grid a few times with reins and one hand on the rein before trying it completely hand free. Crazy!

7. Lateral movement

Ask your instructor for some help when introducing your pony to a new lateral movement so that you teach him the correct way. Who knows? You might be the next Lottie Fry and Glamourdale!

8. Beach ride

Want to have a gallop along the beach with the wind blowing in your pony’s mane like in the movies? Get yourself and your fave pony down to the beach! Even if galloping isn’t your thing, going for a slow stroll is always great fun, too, and super-relaxing for your pony.

9. Pony pal holiday

Go on holiday with your best friends and ponies! There are loads of cool places that can cater for you and your pony. You’ll have endless adventures exploring a new area or you might be able to have a go in an arena if there’s one on site so you can train your pony somewhere different!

10. Teach your pony tricks

Watch some videos online to see how to start training your pony to do tricks. It’s a good way of building a bond with your pony and is super-cool to show people at your yard what you’ve taught him. He’ll shake hooves on that!
