Rescued ponies named in honour of NHS heroes

Some rescued ponies have been named after NHS hospitals to celebrate their hard work throughout the Covid-19 pandemic

In November 2019, 137 ponies were rescued from a site in Wales, and Redwings Horse Sanctuary now cares for 19 of them. Each pony was suffering upon rescue but, thanks to the hard work of the Redwings team, they’re now thriving and healthy.

To show their support for NHS heroes, Redwings has named each of the rescued ponies after NHS hospitals – including Alexandra, Radcliffe, Good Hope and even Princess Royal! Each pony was super-nervous when they arrived, but with lots of handling and training from the team they’re growing in confidence and are much happier.

Nic de Brauwere, Redwings’ Head of Welfare and Behaviour and Chair of the National Equine Welfare Council (NEWC), said: “The horses have recovered well but most are currently spending time at our specialist Behaviour Centre to undo the neglect of their behavioural needs experienced at Whispering Willows, which left them fearful of people. It’ll be some time before any of them are ready to be assessed for possible rehoming in the future, but for now they’re enjoying happy and healthy new lives at the Sanctuary.”
