Free reins in action

Have you ever caught your reins in a gate while riding your pony? Or has he ever got his legs tangled in them when he’s having an itch? Then you might want to give this new riding gear a go

A brand-new safety rein system had been designed to put your pony’s welfare first, help reduce the risk of injury to both of you and stop him getting tangled up. Free Reins feature a quick-release connector that unclips when they’re pulled hard enough, meaning the reins will come apart. But don’t worry! Once the connector (which replaces your normal rein buckle) has come apart, you can put your reins back together ready to ride in again.

Did you know?

According to a recent survey in partnership with equine scientist Dr David Marlin, 61% of riders have experienced a horse or pony catch his reins on an object. (Survey based on 1,535 respondents, the survey is still open)

Stay safe!

“It’s really important to me to make riding as safe as possible for both the rider and the horse, but without compromising on style,” says Laurie Williams, who created Free Reins after watching a young rider fall off and get caught up in the reins. “The Free Reins connector is helping make riding safer and adding a little style.”

The leather reins come in black or brown, with a choice of two clip colours – simple chrome or stylish gold – and they’ve got great grip, too. To make sure they’re super-safe, the reins have gone through lots of testing at lots of different centres.

“Safety’s incredibly important when it comes to being around or riding horses,” commented Dr David Marlin. “This appears to be a well designed product that we hope will decrease injury risk.”

Showjumping coach Mark McCourt added: “Over the years I’ve seen a lot of riders keep hold of the reins or pull off the bridle when they fall. It’s really important that we have safety devices, like Free Reins, that will help protect the riders and prevent accidents.”
