Set yourself up for dressage test success

Riding centre lines

Whatever level you ride at, there are a few basic elements that catch riders out in dressage tests time and time again. They might seem totally basic, and you may not have given them much thought before, but if you can get them nailed down, you’re sure to give your marks a huge boost! So, here are some awesome exercises that’ll help you ace your tests every time.

Quick transitions

It’s super-important that your pony’s responsive to your aids so you can be accurate when you ask him to make a transition. He should listen to your seat so you don’t have to pull on the reins and disrupt his rhythm.

Most dressage tests ask you to walk, trot or canter at a specific marker. So, make sure you insist upon this level of accuracy when you’re schooling at home!

Top tip

At the lower levels, you’ll be able to make a progressive transition to halt – which means you can walk for a couple of strides first.
