Race training with Harlow

Pony racing’s a super-thrilling sport to watch, and jockeys get such a big adrenaline rush as they zoom around the track. But what’s involved in the perfect prep to make the difference between falling at the last hurdle or coming home champion?

What do jockeys wear?

It’s really important that jockeys wear safety gear, including a skull cap and body protector that are up to standard – after all, they’re going sooo fast and need to stay protected in case they take a tumble. Silks are the colours a jockey wears during the race and they consist of a shirt that goes over the body protector and a hat silk. Think of them like a uniform, they represent the pony and his owner!

Racing saddles are a key piece of kit, too. They’re designed with a flat pommel and cantle to make sure nothing gets in the way of the jockey’s movements.

Riding in a racing position

Have you ever tried shortening your stirrups and riding around the arena in jockey position? Super tricky, right?! Well, when riding in a race you have to hold that position for several minutes! It takes plenty of training and practice but here are some tips for getting the perfect racing position…

Getting fit for racing

Both the jockey and the pony need to be super fit to take part in a race and have a good chance of winning! A pony who’s in training will do lots of hacking and interval work to boost his fitness, as well as jumping to improve his technique.

Jockeys also need to train hard so they can keep up with their pony – they do lots of running to stay fit, as well as exercises to build leg, core and back strength. Strong muscles are important so they can hold themselves in the perfect position while encouraging their pony on with their legs!
