Get to grips with the basics of bitting right here

With so many different styles of bit on the market, it can be very tricky to tell which one’s best for your pony. The right bit for him will depend on his level of training, the work he’s doing and your ability as his rider.

The most important factors when it comes to finding the right bit for your pony are its shape and size. While it’s interesting to understand how and why different bits work, it can get complicated, so here are the basics of bitting to get you started.

Size matters

It’s super-important to your pony’s wellbeing that his bit fits him correctly. If the bit you’re using doesn’t fit or isn’t appropriate for what you’re doing with him, it might make him sore or uncomfortable. If it’s too narrow it’ll push against his mouth, which could cause damage, and if it’s too wide it’ll move from side-to-side.

Did you know small ponies don’t always have small mouths? Mouth size depends on type and breeding – not height!

TOP TIP

Make sure you get your pony’s teeth checked by your vet or a fully qualified equine dental technician to make sure they aren’t causing him any problems.

The right position

When it comes to checking if your pony’s bit fits him and is positioned correctly, speak to your instructor or book an appointment with a trained bit and bridle fitter. Don’t forget that different styles have different fit requirements.

But, as a starting point…

  • check the bit’s height first. It must be low enough to be comfortable but if he can get his tongue over it, it’s too low
  • it needs to sit clear of your pony’s front teeth, but not pull his lip upwards
  • check the width – there should be enough room to put one finger each side of the bit between it and the corner of his mouth. To check the thickness, your pony must be able to close his mouth easily and swallow comfortably

TOP TIP

If your pony has sensitive skin and his correctly fitting bit starts to rub, you could use bit butter on his mouth, bit guards to provide added protection or try a bit that’s made from good quality, softer materials.

Get fitted

When measuring your pony for a bit, there are two parts to look at…

The width You can measure a bit you know fits him or, with the help of an adult, carefully place a piece of smooth cord in his mouth and mark each side of it, then measure between the marks. This will give you a good idea of the size he’ll need, but remember fits vary depending on the mouthpiece design. Alternatively, you can ask your saddler or bit fitter to use a special bit size gauge.

The thickness This is a measurement of the fattest part – right next to the bit rings. It’s best to get help with this because the thickness your pony requires will depend on his type of mouth.

Take care

Make sure you take care of your pony’s bit, so it doesn’t cause discomfort or get damaged. Check regularly for sharp edges, loose parts and signs of wear. Always rinse and dry the bit after every ride.
