Five ways to enjoy your time on the yard
If you love ponies, hanging out at the yard is the next best thing to being in the saddle. But how can you make the most of your stable time? Find out right here!
1. Buddy up
If you go to a riding school or keep your own pony (or share one) on a livery yard, you’re sure to have loads of friends who are as pony obsessed as you are! There’s so much you can do, from having a picnic by your pony’s field to tackling yard jobs together – you’re sure to stay busy with your pony pals.
2. In the know
By getting to know all the ponies at your riding school, you’ll be one step ahead when it comes to riding a different pony in your lesson. The best way to do this is by asking the staff at the yard about their personalities, what they’re like to ride, as well as their likes and dislikes. You could also ask if you can spend a bit of time grooming and watching them in the fields to learn more about their behaviour.
3. Neigh-bours
There’s sure to be someone at the yard who’s looking for an extra pair of hands from time to time! You could take it in turns with your neighbour to do chores, such as sweep around the stables or tidy the feed room. Or you could offer to help get their pony ready for a show – whatever it is, they’re sure to appreciate the offer!
Top tip
It can be daunting making new friends, but try to remember that everyone has been in the same situation before. If someone new arrives at your yard, why not be the one to introduce yourself? You never know, they could become a life-long bestie!
4. Into the future
Planning activities or adventures with your friends for everyone to get involved in is so awesome! You could organise a group hack, set up fences together to get ready for an epic jumping session or plan events for the summer holidays. Why not set up a bake sale or fancy dress showing comp to raise money for your fave equine charity?
5. Chill out
Remember that you don’t have to ride your pony every time you go to the yard. In fact, he’ll love it if you just spend the time chilling with him in his field or stable, or giving him a pamper while he enjoys a tasty haynet. Not only will this make him happy, it will help you get to know him and boost your relationship, too.
