How to convince your parents you’re ready for a pony

Show you’re responsible

If you’re dreaming of your own pony, start by proving you’re up to the job! Do your chores without being asked and lend a hand with everyday jobs around the house – it shows you’re reliable and committed. It’s all about showing that you’re mature enough to handle the responsibility of a pony of your own.

Learn as much as you can

Being a pony pro isn’t just about riding – it’s about knowing everything that goes into caring for your four-legged best friend. Set some time aside to read up on pony care and management – PONY mag is the perfect place to start! Don’t be shy to ask your instructor for some tips, too.

Understanding the costs

Owning a pony is a big financial commitment. Do some research and find out what things really cost, from feed and farrier visits to vet bills, lessons and tack. Once you know, show your parents you’re serious by saving some of your pocket money or helping around the house to earn a bit extra.

Pony practice

Get as much hands-on experience as you can! Volunteer at a local riding school to help with yard duties and cleaning tack. Or, if some of your friends have ponies, offer to help them, too – every bit of experience counts.

Not just a phase

Show everyone that your love for ponies isn’t just a passing phase. Keep a pony journal or scrapbook filled with photos, notes and memories to show how long you’ve adored ponies. Stay consistent with your lessons or helping at the yard, too – not just for a few weeks, but month after month.

Trial period

If your parents aren’t quite ready to go into full pony ownership, why not suggest a trial run? Starting with a share or loan is a great way to show how committed you are. When your parents see you sticking with it, they’ll feel more confident that owning a pony isn’t such a huge leap after all.

How it benefits you

Let your parents see that loving ponies isn’t just about fun – it’s helping you grow, too! Ponies teach amazing life skills like patience, responsibility, empathy and confidence. Plus, riding keeps you active and outdoors.

Be patient

You might not get your dream pony straight away – and that’s okay! The key is to keep showing your dedication, learning, and helping out wherever you can. Every early morning, every lesson, and every mucky stable proves how serious you are. And remember, sometimes waiting makes it even more magical when it finally happens. The best things – especially ponies – come to those who wait.

Luckily my mum loves horses. She would love to get some. But right now we can’t.
