Discover how to ride bounces with our handy hints

Bounce-back

If you’re searching for a new gymnastic exercise to try with your pony, then look no further. When you get them right, bounces are sooo much fun and a really good training tool. Here’s how to ride them.

What are bounces?

Two or three fences in a row that are set one large canter stride apart (2.7–3m). Because the fences are less than one stride distance, as your pony lands from the first fence, he’ll have to take off for the next one.

Did you know?

Bounce fences should be kept really small, no more than 40cm.

What are the benefits?

There are so many great things about bounces! Not only are they quick and easy to put up, they can also be tailored to suit every level, which means you can progress to more difficult set-ups, and eventually include them in larger grids to really test your skills!

Due to how they’re jumped, bounces are a fab strengthening exercise and encourage your pony to be really quick on his feet. He’s got to work really hard to lift off as soon as he’s landed, so his hindquarters will get a huge boost and he’ll become super-agile.

Top riding tips

The key when riding bounces is to not interfere too much with your pony and, once you’ve set him up, let him do most of the work. Here are five top riding tips…

  • stay in light seat – avoid folding too much (when the fences are small you don’t need to) and try to remain out of the saddle in between the fences to prevent putting your pony off his rhythm and slowing him down
  • keep a soft rein contact – pulling on the reins will negatively impact your pony’s balance, rhythm and scope
  • get a straight approach – if you don’t, your pony might drift to one side and run out, and due to the lack of space between fences, you won’t be able to correct him easily so you’ve got to get your line perfect before the first fence
  • look up – once you’ve found your line, pick a tree or post at the end of the grid to focus on so your eyes stay up and, remember, never look down at the floor!
  • keep your leg on – encourage your pony to power through the grid and pick up his legs neatly over each fence by squeezing with your legs

Bounces are hard work for your pony, so don’t overdo it in your sessions or use them in your training routine too often.
