Learn how to keep your pony calm on Bonfire Night
While a lot of us find Bonfire Night very exciting, some ponies can find fireworks scary and stressful. Loud noises and flashing lights can upset even the quietest of ponies, so it’s a good idea to be prepared and make 5 November as safe for him as you can.
Check out our top tips for keeping your pony calm on Bonfire Night…
-
Find out when local displays are being held
While Bonfire Night is officially 5 November, if this falls on a weekday, then there may be events held over the weekend too. Make sure you know when local displays are being held so you can be at the yard or field to check your pony is okay. You could also ask your parents to speak to organisers of local events so they know ponies are being kept nearby.
-
Keep your pony to his usual routine
Sticking to your pony’s usual routine can help to minimise stress. If your pony is normally stabled overnight, he’s likely to find it less stressful being stabled on Bonfire Night too. If he’s usually turned out overnight, try to stick to this, too.
Remember that you know your pony best. If you think your pony will cope better being stabled, consider bringing him in. Some ponies prefer to be left in the field, as they don’t like to feel trapped.
-
Check your stable or field is safe and secure
It’s super important that your pony’s stable or field is safe. Walk around the field the day before and check that all fencing is secure and there are no objects in the field that your pony could hurt himself on. If he’s stabled, ensure it’s as comfortable as possible with no sharp objects sticking out of the walls or door.
-
Make sure your pony has enough forage
Give your pony enough forage to keep him entertained and occupied throughout the evening. Some yummy hay can help to distract him while the fireworks are going on, hopefully keeping him calmer!
-
Stay with your pony if needed
If your pony gets upset, see if you can stay with him until after the fireworks have finished, to check that he settles down again and hasn’t injured himself. Remember, it’s important that you stay calm as ponies can pick up on our stress! Playing some relaxing music can help to soften the sound of the fireworks and keep you calm too.
-
If your pony gets very upset, speak to your vet
If you already know that your pony gets very upset by fireworks, it’s worth contacting your vet as they may suggest sedating your pony to keep him calm during the evening. Ask an adult to contact your vet ahead of time so there’s time to make necessary arrangements.
