3 in-hand exercises to add to your pony’s routine

Did you know that you don’t have to get in the saddle to give your pony a good workout? In-hand work is really enjoyable and it’s amazing when you notice the progress your pony’s made over a few sessions, so why not have a go at my top three exercises and see the results for yourself?

The benefits

Doing in-hand work with your pony is great for so many reasons! Without a rider he’ll have more freedom of movement, which means he’ll be able to use his muscles effectively and become super-strong and flexible. Plus, seeing him move from the ground and watching his muscles engage throughout the movements is really interesting!

Groundwork is fab for lots of different types of pony, too, no matter their age, level or discipline. If your pony’s unable to be ridden, be sure to check with your vet before trying any in-hand routines.

1. Hilly hacks

It’s pretty hilly where I live so I’m always taking advantage of the hills during my in-hand sessions. You might find that you don’t even need to leave the yard (if your yard manager is happy for you to walk around the fields) or, if it’s safe to do so, you can walk your usual hacking routes.

Make sure you do this with your pony in a bridle and a leadrope or lunge line so you have plenty of control.

As you power walk up the hills, try to encourage your pony to drop his head and when walking downhill, allow him to take his time and figure out where he’s placing his feet – it’s great for improving his balance!

Top tip

Avoid the roads where possible, but if you do need to walk along a lane to get to a hilly field, lead your pony from his right-hand side so you can see the traffic around you.

2. Stretch out

There’s something sooo nice about having a good stretch and just like us, ponies love stretching, too! It’s important that you speak to your physio for advice and exercises to do that will benefit your pony as, if you do them incorrectly, they can cause more problems than they solve! However, when used in the right way, stretching can help boost circulation and aid recovery which means they’re great post-comp or lesson.

You can carry out a stretching session in your pony’s stable or the arena, just pop a headcollar on him, grab some treats as a reward and you’re good to go!

Did you know? 

Your pony’s muscles should be warmed up before stretching so take him for a brisk walk around the yard or arena first.

Top tip

Try using a lick to encourage your pony to hold the stretch for a few seconds. Sometimes they can get nippy if you’re using small treats, so watch your fingers!

3. Polework patterns

With just a few poles, you can improve your pony’s suppleness, straightness and strength. Plus, there are hundreds of layouts to choose from, so you’ll never be stuck for inspiration if you look online!

You can lead your pony over the poles or use them while lungeing or long-reining (just make sure an experienced adult is there to help) which means you can really mix it up.

Poles are sooo helpful if you’re teaching your pony tricky lateral movements or trying to refine your square halts, for example. The options and benefits are endless!

Top tip

Don’t rush your pony over the poles, let him process the challenge and then he’ll be more likely to step cleanly over them which means he’ll be working his muscles even harder!

Top tip

Whatever you’re doing with your pony, remember to reward him when he does a good job and listens to your aids. It means he’ll be more likely to repeat that behaviour, plus he’ll love the attention, whether it’s from a scratch on his neck or a tasty treat!
