Why are donkeys wearing socks?

Donkeys spotted wearing super-cute stripey socks to protect their legs from biting insects

The Donkey Sanctuary is a UK animal welfare charity that looks after thousands of mules and donkeys all over the world, and now some of the 100 donkeys at its sanctuary in Italy have been spotted wearing stripey socks, following a social media appeal for the items of clothing that reached more than 90,000 in one week alone. Of course, the donkeys look super-cute in their stripey socks, but, in fact, the stripey pattern can actually stop flies and insects from biting, making the donkeys feel much more comfortable in the summer months.

Fundraising Officer Ilaria Ruzza said: “It didn’t matter if they were new or used as long as they were clean, in good condition and were black (or grey) and white, over-the-knee socks and by using social media, we were able to reach our supporters across the country really quickly.”

Supporters donated 180 pairs of the cool, stripey socks for the donkeys to wear, as well as more than €600 to support the sanctuary. The donkeys are now looking forward to a relaxing autumn in their stylish new legwear that will stop those pesky insects from biting them.

Following the success of the socks in Italy, this tactic is now being tried here in the UK, as the herd at the Donkey Sanctuary in Devon is also wearing the funky leggings. Even better, volunteers and staff at the sanctuary are also currently designing leggings that can be attached to the donkeys’ fly rugs to make sure the ones who are really irritated by insects in the warmer months will have complete fly protection – how cool!
