Get your pony ready for clipping

It’s that time of year when your pony needs a haircut and there’s plenty to do to make sure the job goes smoothly

If you haven’t already had your pony clipped and you’re not sure where to start when it comes to getting him ready, our step-by-step guide will make sure you’re fully prepped. Our guide will have him feeling and looking fabulous before the clipping has even begun!

If the weather’s warm enough, give your pony a bath the day before, so you’ll be sure he’s completely dry before clipping. Pay attention to the areas where the coat is thicker as this holds more grease than other parts. Don’t forget to rinse out all the shampoo!
On the day of the clip or if the weather was too cold to give him a bath the day before, groom him thoroughly, again making sure you pay attention to the greasier areas of his coat.
Before clipping commences, remove your pony’s rug to allow the coat hair to stand so that the clippers can run smoothly over it.
To keep the mane out of the way while clipping, split it into sections with plaiting bands. Do the same for the tail but wrap it in a tail bandage instead.
If an adult’s clipping your pony for you and they need to draw outlines, ask if you can give them a hand. Using white chalk to mark out the clip lines is a great way to ensure your clip stays as straight as possible – after all, you don’t want a wobbly coat on your pony.
If your pony is a fidget, it’s best to hang up a haynet so he can eat while he’s being clipped. It’s also helpful to clip when the yard is less busy so he’s not as tempted to move around to check what’s going on.
Finally, if you’re staying to watch the clip or helping, make sure you’re wearing the correct gear. Wear clothes that are waterproof, so the hair doesn’t stick to them and make sure you’re wearing yard boots and a hat for safety.
