Horse vet worm egg counts

Share your worming regime to protect the health of ponies in the future

Vets have come together to launch Project WORMS (Working to Overcome Resistance and Make for a Sustainable future), which is aiming to tackle the growing problem of resistance to wormers. This worldwide problem is mainly due to how we manage our ponies, so we must act now to prevent them from becoming seriously ill in the future.

To protect worming drugs, vets need to first understand how and why they’re being purchased and used. Therefore, the initial part of the project involves horse owners completing surveys to give information on how and when they worm, and which products they use. The vets will then look at the results and work with horse owners to try and prevent wormer resistance leading to serious illness, disease or even death.

We all want to do the right thing for our ponies, but there are lots of people who are unaware of how serious wormer resistance could be. Information from the surveys will allow vets to help owners improve worming practices in the future. This means the effectiveness of the drugs will be improved, which will ultimately benefit the health and welfare of all ponies.

With no new worming drugs on the horizon, it’s important we all know how and when to use them so we can do everything to protect the drugs that are currently available. So, we need to be responsible and use them strategically and only when necessary.
