Eventer Gemma Tattersall won her first 5* comp riding Chilli Knight

Yesterday (Sunday 5 September) we witnessed a phenomenal winning performance from Gemma Tattersall, on board Chilli Knight, at Chedington Bicton Park 5* Horse Trials. After 24 runs at the  level, she finally claimed her first win and certainly did it in style – being the only person to finish on her dressage score of 27.9.

Battling it out

But it wasn’t plain sailing for Gemma. Her close friends, Piggy March and Pippa Funnell, both produced fantastic dressage tests and cross-country rounds meaning it was all to play for on the final day in the showjumping. Pippa was first out of the three to go and jumped clear. At this point Gemma was convinced she couldn’t do it, but she put her game face on and acted as if it was just another round of showjumping, no different to any other day. Chilli Knight rattled a few fences, but Gemma kept her cool and got a clear round in the bag. The pressure was on for Piggy, who had to jump clear to win. Unfortunately for Piggy, she started well but had two poles meaning Gemma secured the title.

Girl power podium

Piggy’s faults meant she fell-down into third place, with Pippa in second and Gemma in first. But the success for the British riders didn’t stop there, with the top seven combinations all flying the Union flag – how awesome!

From the start

Gemma’s win was super-special because she was riding homebred, Chilli Knight. Alfie – as he’s known at home – is now 11 years old and she’s known him since the day he was born. He’s got a super-willing attitude and his record shows how truly talented he is. Gemma also competed Alfie’s mum, King’s Gem, and full sister, Chilli’s Gem – it certainly runs in the family!

Happily ever after

The thrill of an incredible weekend didn’t stop at the end of the showjumping. While Gemma was taking part in the press conference alongside her podium pals, Pippa and Piggy, Gary Stevens – her boyfriend – had a very important question to ask. Soon there wasn’t a dry eye in the house as Gary asked Gemma to marry him! What a wonderful weekend!
