40 ponies start a new journey following a huge rescue mission

Animal welfare charities have come together to rescue a herd of 40 ponies after their owner sadly died. World Horse Welfare was contacted by the family who were unable to take on the day-to-day care of the ponies. They were concerned about their welfare and keen to do the right thing, so signed them over to the charity’s care.

However, finding space for 40 ponies was a huge challenge so, through the National Equine Welfare Council (NEWC), other charities got involved to arrange suitable accommodation. After they were rounded up on the farm in North Wales, the ponies were checked over by vets and began their journey towards a new life.

World Horse Welfare took in 14 ponies, HAPPA rescued six, five went to Bransby Horses, one was rehomed directly to a friend of the family and the remainder made their journey to Blue Cross.

Cases with large numbers of ponies are unfortunately common. Rae Andrews, from World Horse Welfare, said “the fact that we were able to find places for them is a testament to the way all the different organisations involved through NEWC work together.” All the charities involved understand the importance of working together to tackle the welfare problems equines face, and they’re very grateful for the support received that allows them to make it all possible.

The 14 ponies at World Horse Welfare’s Penny Farm are becoming used to being handled and can even be seen by visitors to the centre. It’s also believed that some of the mares are pregnant, so the team are excited about the prospect of more adorable ponies being born in the coming months! It’s the aim for each of these ponies to be rehomed when they’re fit and ready, so they can be offered a second chance and make space in the farms for more horses that desperately need help to be taken in.
