Keep your pony’s coat in great condition as we head into winter
As the days get shorter, it’s a sign to your pony that it’s time to shed his fine summer coat and grow a thicker winter one to protect him from the colder, wetter weather. While this fluffy appearance might make your pony look adorable, you’ll need to keep him comfortable and healthy. Here’s what to consider.
A cut above
If you’re planning to ride your pony throughout the winter months he’ll probably need to be clipped. It might seem crazy to remove some of your pony’s coat when it’s colder, but a clip will help him dry off more quickly after exercise.
Ask someone experienced to clip your pony and for advice on the best type of clip for him and his lifestyle and workload – there are lots of different clips to choose from.
Top tip
Ask an expert to check your pony’s rugs fit him well and have a spare waterproof rug in case one gets soaked through or ripped!
No sweat
Your pony might be a bit hot and sweaty after exercise and washing him off is the best way to remove dirt and sweat and leave him feeling awesome again. Here’s what to do…
- Add some no-rinse body wash to a bucket of warm water
- Grab a cloth and wash off all the sweaty areas of your pony’s body
- Use a sweat scraper to remove any excess water
- If it’s windy or cold, your pony might benefit from a cooler rug to help dry him
Did you know?
Ponies’ coats change twice a year – in autumn and in spring – and these changes occur due to the amount of daylight hours rather than the temperature.
