Pony Nuts Competition prep

Who doesn’t love getting kitted out in their show gear and strutting their stuff at a comp? But if you want to show off your pony, he’s got to look mega-smart. So, here’s my quick guide to getting him looking top notch on show day, and some handy tips to help you prepare for the winter comp season.

First impressions

I like to make sure my ponies look their very best at a comp – stable stains and yellow tails are not cool! So, depending on the weather, I give them a bath the day before. If it’s too chilly to do a full bath, I use warm water and just clean the areas that need it most.

Giving your pony a deep clean the day before a comp means you can save time on the big day. You’ll only need to do a quick groom to get him looking tip top again! Don’t forget that using a mane and tail detangler will make plaiting really tricky, so it’s best to avoid using it for a few days before your comp.

TOP TIP

Make sure you allow plenty of time to warm up your pony, especially in winter when might be chilly. It’ll take longer for his muscles to get working and you don’t want to cause him injury by rushing things.

Get the look

You might find plaiting a challenging task if you don’t do it often, but with plenty of practise it’ll soon become an easy and enjoyable part of your comp prep – the feeling of achieving perfect plaits is so awesome. Plus, it’ll make your pony look fab.

Once I’ve brushed through my pony’s mane, I divide it into sections and tie each one up to create bunches, making sure they’re as evenly sized as possible – this will give the plaits a more professional look. Then, I work my way down the mane plaiting and rolling them up as I go – you can plait them all first, then roll them if you prefer but I find my method much quicker and easier!
