Pony on the gallops

If youโ€™ve never taken your fave pony to the gallops, then itโ€™s one for your summer holiday bucket list! Thereโ€™s nothing quite like going zoomies with your equine bestie, but what do you need to think about to maximise your time on the track?

What are the benefits?

  • Taking your pony to the gallops is great for mixing up his training sessions. Heโ€™ll love being out and about!
  • Thereโ€™s no better way to boost your ponyโ€™s fitness! With the perfect ground, you can really work on his strength and stamina!
  • Zoomies with your pony is one of the most freeing feelings โ€“ and it shows you have so much trust and confidence in each other.
  • On top of all of this, itโ€™s just sooo much fun!

Did you know?

Gallops can either be straight, curved or a complete loop. Theyโ€™re all really fun to ride on, but unless theyโ€™re a complete loop, youโ€™ll usually have to leave the gallop track and ride back to the bottom to go up them again.

TOP TIP

Before you get going with any faster work, make sure you warm up properly. Taking your pony for a good walk around the track first is a great way to familiarise him with the environment, too.

Safety while at the gallops

Itโ€™s essential to stay safe to ensure you have the best time…

  • Before you get going, make sure your pony is wearing the correct tack โ€“ generally, itโ€™s a good idea to wear the same tack as you would for jumping or fast hacking.
  • Check his girth is correctly fastened and not too loose (or tight โ€“ ouch!).
  • Pop a neck strap on so you can hold it for extra stability.
  • Fit your pony with a pair of brushing boots to help protect his legs as you up the pace.
  • Check the chinstrap on your hat to make sure itโ€™s not too loose.
  • Itโ€™s a good idea to wear a body protector.
