Follow our guide to become BFFs with the new pony in your life!

Getting-to-know-you

There’s no doubt that getting a new pony – whether it’s your very own or a share – is an incredibly exciting time! But it may bring a lot of change, which can be nerve-wracking for both of you. So, here’s how you can get to know the newest member of your family, and set you up for epic adventures and ever-lasting memories.

Back story

Try to find out as much information about your pony as you can from his previous owner. Asking lots of questions shows you care, which will be really important to the person handing him over to you, too. You can ask questions such as…

  • does he prefer to be turned out individually or in a herd?
  • is he stabled in winter?
  • how often does he see the farrier?
  • what’s his feeding routine?
  • is he good to handle, lead and load?

When you visit your pony to try him, it’s a good idea to watch someone else ride him first before you get on. That way, you’ll know a little more about how to get the most from him.

Top tip

Keep a journal that includes lots of useful info about your pony, as well as his regular appointments. It will help you keep him in good health and, if there’s ever a problem, you might be able to identify the issue.

Settle down

If your pony has moved homes to be with you, let him have a few days to relax, settle into his routine and familiarise himself with his new surroundings before you get in the saddle. Where possible, try to keep his daily routine the same as this will help reduce stress levels and build his trust in you.

It’s important that you don’t make any big changes too quickly as this might affect his health, especially when it comes to his food.
