Worming-101

Managing your pony’s worm burden is an essential aspect of his care. From knowing what to test for each season to how to find out whether your pony needs worming, we’ve covered all the info you’ll need to keep worms at bay.

Know your worms

There are a few different types of worms that can live in your pony. These are:

  • Large redworms
  • Small redworms
  • Tapeworms
  • Roundworms
  • Pinworms

 Count it out

Regular worm egg counts are the best way to determine whether your pony has a large worm burden. Ideally, you should do one every three months. It’s really simple – all you have to do is collect some of your pony’s poo and post it to a special lab or your vet. It’ll be tested, then the specialist will tell you how many worm eggs are in your pony’s poo.

Ponies always have some amount of worms in their bodies, so don’t worry too much if your vet tells you that he has some in his poo. They’ll let you know whether he needs worming based on the count, but it’s usually if there are more than 250 eggs per gramme.

Did you know?

Pinworms can be seen around your pony’s dock because the eggs are laid on his body, so they don’t show up on worm egg counts.
