Posted 11th March 2019

Do you want to strut your stuff in the show-ring? Here’s all you need to know...

Showing your pony, ponies lined up for the judge

Have you always dreamed of going showing with your fave pony? Would you like him to shine in a class of beautifully turned out ponies and riders, but don’t know how to get started? PONY mag’s ultimate showing guide will tell you all you need to know.

A class above

There’s loads of different types of showing class that you can enter. You could try…

  • Best turned out
  • Mountain and moorland
  • Show hunter pony
  • Veteran
  • Working hunter pony
  • Best rider

It’s not all serious stuff either, there’s fun classes such as…

  • Most handsome gelding or prettiest mare
  • Family pony
  • Pony most like his owner

Fun classes are a great way to get a taste for showing and see if it’s something you’d like to do more of with your fave pony.

Top tip

Some classes will have different rules on what to wear, so check the schedule or ask the show organiser if you’re unsure.

In the ring

When you enter the ring, ride around the outside in walk. Keep an eye on the steward who will tell you when to trot and canter. They’ll then call all the riders in to line up near the centre of the ring.

The judge will make their way along the line of competitors, asking questions about their ponies. It’s super-important to be friendly and chatty with the judge – they want to see you do well, so try not to feel nervous when you’re talking to them.

Top tip

The judge will ask you your pony’s name, age and what you do together. It’s a good idea to think about what you’ll say, so you can be prepared.
