Who doesn’t love a long hack with friends, or heading out cross-country schooling with their fave pony? Riding in open spaces can be super-fun, but if you’re not confident you can control your pony, it can be a bit scary. Here are some of my top tips to help boost your confidence so you can have loads of fun getting out and about.

Top tip

Even if you don’t usually ride in one, why not pop on a body protector to give you extra peace of mind?

Stop ‘n’ start

While you’re getting ready to take your pony out, it’s a great idea to practise stopping and moving him on while you ride at home. Getting him listening to your aids will instil good habits that will carry across when you ride him away from home. Use transitions between and within paces to get him laser-focused on you.

Top tip

Make sure your pony learns to stand still for you to mount – if he’s fidgeting because he’s feeling excited it can make the day extra stressful.

Friends in high places

Taking a confident friend with a super-safe pony will be a huge help when you get out into an open space. Knowing that their pony won’t take off or get over-excited will help you feel more relaxed and give your pony some added support in case he feels nervous. It’s also reassuring to have another person with you, especially one you can rely on.

Top tip

Always check the ground carefully before you ride somewhere new to make sure your pony doesn’t trip or stumble.

On location

It’s sooo important to choose the right place when you first start riding in open spaces. The area should have plenty of room without being enormous and be well-fenced so your pony can’t escape if you feel out of control. Stick to fairly flat areas to start with and avoid jumping if you’re worried, as this might make your pony really excited!

Top tip

Try to change up your routine when you ride in open spaces so your pony doesn’t anticipate going for zoomies.

Tacked up

Knowing your tack and equipment is in good working order will give you loads of confidence, so check it carefully for signs of wear before getting on.

Make sure your tack fits well and that you have enough brakes to stop your pony should he get over-excited. If you jump him in a different bit to the one you use for flatwork, pop that one on for your first ride, just in case. A neckstrap or martingale can also be a big help so you can keep your balance and have something to hold for support.

Top tip

To stay on top of any broken or worn bits of kit, thoroughly check over your tack every time you clean it.

Practise makes perfect

The key to all things pony is practise! The more often you ride in open spaces, the easier it’ll become and the more confident you and your pony will feel about it. Try to make it part of your regular routine, even if it just means changing your hacking routine or asking to ride in the fields at your yard. Your pony will soon treat it as just another day out and won’t get nervous or overly excited, meaning you can enjoy your ride, stress-free.
