TRUSTY TECHNIQUES

Method one: Effleurage

This is a kind of stroking technique and it’s really easy to learn. Here’s how to do it…

  1. First of all, decide where on your pony’s body you want to massage him – his back is a good place to start because those muscles work hard when you’re riding him.
  2. Place the palm of your hand on your chosen area and apply light pressure. Most of the pressure you’re applying should come from the heel of your hand.
  3. Keeping the pressure on and slide your hand along the area. You should start to feel your pony’s skin and muscles ripple as he feels the effects.

TOP TIP

Apply pressure gradually when you start massaging your pony and build up to about as much pressure as you’d use to dent a football. It’s a good idea to practise on your own arm first then try experimenting with different levels of pressure on your pony.

Method two: Cupping

This technique is great at promoting circulation and can be used before you ride to help warm up your pony’s muscles – with this method it’s best to use a light touch rather than a heavy hand. To do it…

  1. Cup your hand so that the edges (your little finger, fingertips, thumb and the bottom of your hand) come into contact with your pony, trapping air within your palm.
  2. Gently start working in the muscles using both hands alternately in a steady rhythm, looking out for ripples in his skin and muscles.

TOP TIP

You can use these methods on any muscly area, but avoid your pony’s bony bits, such as along his spine and over his joints, when massaging him.

TOP TIP

If your pony moves away from the pressure you’re applying, it could be that you’ve surprised him or he might be sore – if this is the case, it’s best to stop what you’re doing and contact your vet.

Did you know?

It doesn’t matter whether you massage your pony in the direction of or against his hair. It’s the muscles underneath that you’re targeting.
