Meet Twiggy, the orphan foal!

Meet Twiggy, the miniature orphan foal, and find out what she gets up to with her owner, Caroline!

Caroline tells PONY…:

In early May I received a call from The Liphook Equine Hospital to say that the RSPCA had bought an orphan foal into the practice, and that she was in need of a home. I used work on the nursing team there before opening Pony Pals, which is a miniature horse therapy organisation.

The little foal was found in a storm drain and was very weak as she was only a day or so old. I went along to meet her at The Liphook Equine Hospital, and then she quickly moved into my back garden so that I could maintain her hourly feeds around the clock.

We named the little bay foal ‘Twiggy’, as at the time she was so tiny that she resembled a Twig! When we checked her out of the hospital she weighed just 11kg and stood at 17 inches. She was so tiny that she was able to wear my cocker spaniels’ coats for the first few weeks!

During the day time Twiggy was transported around in my miniature horse box – she came along to the local tack shop and joined in with our usual daily activities, including taking the dogs for a swim!

But the daily activities at Pony Pals are far more than just walking the dogs – we take miniature horses to visit the residents of nursing and care homes as well as the children at nursery schools and children’s hospices.

Little Twiggy has a career ahead of her as a therapy horse, so she started her training immediately. She was very easy to house train, and happily wondered into the care homes to have the residents bottle feed her. She has grown up around the medical equipment, walking on different surfaces, and even using the lift to visit the residents on upper levels!

Little Twiggy has gone from being a foal that was thrown away, to a therapy pony that brings joy to so many people. She has heard lots of stories and memories from the residents, and rekindled their love of horses. They always say that the smell of a horse brings back so many happy memories. Twiggy loves to be groomed by the residents and have her mane plaited, she also likes to have a little snooze with her head resting on their lap!

Twiggy is always enjoying life and having lots of adventures!
