Terrific Tennessee Walkers
Our terrific feature about Tennessee Walking horses in PONY: the annual is well worth a read! Here are some great pace facts to show you how funky these Walkers are!
Did you know that Tennessee Walkers have three paces that are very different from normal horse paces? Let's start at the beginning, shall we?
Flat Walk
The flat walk is brisk, with long strides. The Tennessee Walker can go at up to eight miles per hour during a flat walk — that’s about the same speed as a running human!
It is a four-beat pace, with each of the hooves hitting the ground separately, the same as a normal walking pace.
Tennessee Walkers also ‘overstride’.
The Running walk
This is where the back hoof tracks in front of the front hoof by up to six inches, a much more considerable over-track than the average horse. They also nod their heads as they move.
Canter
The canter is similar to normal horse breeds, but it is a very relaxed motion when riding a Tennessee Walker. It is a three-beat pace, the same as a normal canter.
