Burghley Horse Trials is a four star event held every September on the where experienced international horses and riders compete in dressage, cross-country and showjumping phases in the beautiful parkland that surrounds Burghley House.

The house is widely acknowledged to be the finest Elizabethan stately home in the country and provides a spectacular backdrop for the horse trials.

The event takes place in the park with various structures purpose built for the occasion - similar to creating a small town on grass in only six weeks!

The event is a comprehensive test of all-round horsemanship, and involves almost every activity of which the horse is capable. Competitors must complete each section and their overall score provides the final placing.

No other international horse trials site has staged as many Championships, a record ten in all including the first World Championship in 1966.
